A Wirral councillor has called for American rapper Pitbull to perform at Birkenhead Park as part of the town's bid to become the UK Town of Culture. Cllr Kathy Hodson suggested bringing open-air concerts to the park, inspired by the success of the Lytham Festival in Lancashire.
Councillor's proposal
Speaking at a council tourism, communities, culture and leisure committee meeting at Wallasey Town Hall, Cllr Hodson described Pitbull's recent performance at the Lytham Festival as "amazing". She said: "I would love to see open air concerts which would bring so many more people to the Wirral. Lytham used to be a sleepy little town, and now it has Pitbull, who I think is amazing."
She added: "If you can get somebody like Pitbull to Birkenhead Park that would be amazing wouldn't it? I'm obsessed with him! From acorns, trees grow and at some point Lytham was never on the map for being a concert venue but now it is and the visitor economy and the amount of money that it brings into the area is absolutely phenomenal."
Background
Birkenhead was recently shortlisted among 15 towns for the first UK Town of Culture award. The councillor, who recently joined Reform UK, felt the successes of Lytham could inspire similar events in Birkenhead. It is not known if any formal approaches have been made to invite Pitbull to perform.
