Winterfest Sydney 2026: Medieval Fair with Knights and Mermaids

The Winterfest Sydney Medieval Fair returned to the Hawkesbury Showgrounds in Clarendon, New South Wales, on 5 July 2026, transforming the site into a bustling medieval village. The annual event featured historical re-enactments, jousting knights, wandering entertainers, and even mermaids.

Jousting and Medieval Combat

Sir Andrew led the annual Winterfest joust, thrilling spectators with horse-mounted combat. Medieval combat re-enactments were also staged, showcasing sword fights and battle tactics from the era. The final procession was led by winners of the cosplay and costume competition, highlighting the community's creativity.

Costumes and Characters

Attendees dressed in a variety of historical and fantasy attire. Hayley wore a Tudor look, while Jennifer portrayed Catherine Parr, the last of the six wives of Henry VIII. Others donned traditional Scottish attire, and some participants dressed as pantomime characters like Pierrot. The cosplay competition featured entries such as Wade dressed as Legoshi from the anime Beastars, and Andrew, a Warhammer enthusiast, attended with his dog, Dubbo.

Entertainment and Displays

Luna Wolf performed on the lyra lollipop, a circus aerial apparatus. A court jester entertained crowds, and a display prompted conversation around medieval medicine. The medieval camp setup offered a glimpse into daily life, while the Medieval Kitchen Rules feast provided period-appropriate food. The feathered friends display included a black cockatoo, and Jasmine met another unicorn at the event.

Community and Atmosphere

Brother Jack, Friar Matt, Brother Tim, and Hobbit Dom were among the attendees, alongside Najette, Henry, Jessica, and Eleanor who gathered fireside. Little King Richard and his crusaders also participated. The event was captured by photographer Liz Ham, whose images showcase the vibrant atmosphere of the fair.
