Winona Ryder has spoken out about the 'enormous pressure' she faced from female directors to maintain a youthful appearance during her acting career. The 53-year-old star told ELLE UK that despite changing attitudes, the pressure remains intense.
'They'll say, 'Just relax your forehead. Relax.' I'm trying to be a great actor, and they're saying that over and over,' Ryder said. She acknowledged that while it is 'nice that people are talking about how it's OK to age,' the industry still exerts significant pressure on women.
Ryder, known for roles in Heathers and Reality Bites, noted that her career has shifted as she now primarily receives offers to play mothers. However, she remains relaxed about ageing, expressing bewilderment at younger stars who 'are getting weird s*** done' to their faces.
The actress will reprise her role as Joyce Byers in the fifth and final season of Stranger Things later this year. She has been mentoring the show's younger cast, advising them to focus on the work rather than fame. 'I've been trying to change this narrative with the kids,' she said, emphasising that the show's success is due to their talent, not luck.
Ryder also credited Laura Dern for her longevity in Hollywood, recalling how Dern supported her during her first screen test for the film Lucas at age 12. 'I don't think I'd be here without her,' Ryder said, describing their enduring friendship.
