Whoopi Goldberg has predicted that Prince Harry and Prince William will "peacefully reconcile," but the ongoing rift between the brothers suggests otherwise. The aftermath of the duke's 2020 exit as a working royal and his subsequent departure from the UK with Meghan Markle has been marked by public tension and controversy.
Harry's Public Pleas and the Royal Fallout
Harry caused a major stir within the Royal Family following the bombshell Oprah interview and shared intimate details in his tell-all memoir, Spare, which went against the late Queen Elizabeth's motto "never complain, never explain."
On ABC's talk show The View, the panel discussed the Royal Family rift and Harry's plea to reconcile with his brother, questioning whether his decision to speak out publicly would help "mend fences."
The View Panel's Predictions
After the Sister Act star suggested: "I do believe he would like to," her co-host Sara Hines said the brothers would eventually reach a "peaceful reconciliation" and added that their late mother, Princess Diana, "lives through that relationship."
Whoopi then predicted: "I think it'll happen," before speaking on their wider issues and claiming: "So a lot of the tension came, I guess, because Harry and Meghan put their conflicts out in public."
She added: "The question is, will this interview help mend fences? I don't know that this particular interview will help mend fences. But I do believe he would like to."
William's Reported Hurt and Distance
While seeing Prince Harry and Prince William together again might restore some faith in the future of the Royal Family, Harry needs to stop making public declarations and save the pleading for a private conversation with his brother. After the books and the multitude of interviews about his family, it is understandable that the future King put some distance between them. Meanwhile, William has yet to address the things Harry opened up about.
Among the bombshells in his memoir, Harry alleged that William had once knocked him to the floor during an argument over Meghan's behaviour. It remains to be seen whether the Sussexes' return to the UK is a step in the right direction toward the siblings becoming inseparable again, as there are several overdue conversations between them.
Sources Say William Brushed Off Reconciliation
According to sources via the Mirror, the Prince of Wales has shot down the possibility of smoothing things over with his brother, adding he feels deeply hurt by "many things" Harry said publicly about him and other members of the family.
In response, a spokesperson for the Sussexes said it had been GQ's choice to publish the interview, which took place in September, on Tuesday. They added that comments were "absolutely not intended as a swipe at his brother or any other member of his family. The comment was made in a general context and was not directed at his family in any way."
