Who is the Triarchy in House of the Dragon? Explained
Who is the Triarchy in House of the Dragon?

The Triarchy, also known as 'The Three Daughters', is an alliance between the Free Cities of Lys, Myr, and Tyrosh in Essos. In House of the Dragon Season 3, episode 1, viewers witness the Triarchy in full force during the epic Battle of the Gullet, led by pirate and fleet commander Sharako Lohar (played by Abigail Thorn). The Triarchy engages Corlys 'the Sea Snake' Velaryon (Steve Toussaint) in a massive naval battle, resulting in significant casualties, including the deaths of Jacerys 'Jace' Velaryon (Harry Collett) and Sharako herself, as well as Jason Lannister (Jefferson Hall) during a land battle against Northern forces.

Origins and Structure of the Triarchy

Before the Triarchy's formation, Lys, Myr, and Tyrosh were constantly at war with each other. They eventually united to challenge the power of Volantis, the oldest of the Free Cities of Valyria. The Triarchy is ruled by a High Council consisting of 11 magisters from each of the three cities. In Season 1, the Triarchy seizes control of the Stepstones in the Narrow Sea, initially drawing little attention from King Viserys I (Paddy Considine) and the lords of Westeros.

Conflict with Westeros

The Triarchy attacks outlaws and pirates in the Stepstones, which had long troubled Westerosi ships. However, they soon demand a toll for passage through the Narrow Sea, which Westeros initially pays. Over time, the Triarchy's greed grows, and they begin demanding more money, as well as taking women and children as payment. This disrupts Westerosi supply chains and prompts a military response. During the War of the Stepstones, Daemon Targaryen (Matt Smith) and Corlys Velaryon attack the Triarchy, killing their leader, the Crabfeeder, and Corlys is crowned King of the Stepstones and the Narrow Sea.

Sharako Lohar's Vendetta

In Seasons 2 and 3, Sharako Lohar harbors a deep hatred for the Sea Snake. Her decision to throw Tyland Lannister overboard and pursue Corlys Velaryon demonstrates her determination to destroy him. The Battle of the Gullet serves as the climax of this feud, with both sides suffering heavy losses. House of the Dragon Season 3 is streaming on Sky Atlantic, NOW, and HBO Max in the UK and Ireland.
