The 80-year-old joined FIFA President Gianni Infantino on stage for the trophy presentation, where he lingered, prompting Infantino to usher him off. However, post-tournament pictures from Spain's official social media and FIFA cropped out Trump and Infantino.
Ferran Torres adds to controversy
World Cup hero Ferran Torres, who scored the only goal in the final, was seen in Madrid wearing a red hat reading 'Make Spain Great Again', reminiscent of Trump's 'Make America Great Again' designs, suggesting a deliberate move.
The White House released its own Instagram video of the final, featuring Trump prominently. The caption read: "Nobody does it quite like President Trump and America. To everyone who traveled from around the world to join, thanks for experiencing the hype firsthand. Now you know what makes America one of a kind."
Criticism of Trump's presence
The incident drew widespread criticism, with many commenting on Trump's desire to be the centre of attention. Argentina defender Cristian Romero also snubbed a handshake with Trump.
World Cup 2026 smashed records with over 6.8 million fans attending 104 games, as the tournament expanded from 32 to 48 teams. Spain will co-host the 2030 tournament.
