Victoria Coren reveals surprising friendship with Claudia Winkleman
Victoria Coren reveals Claudia Winkleman friendship

BBC's popular quiz programme Only Connect made its comeback on Monday (July 20), with presenter Victoria Coren leading proceedings as two teams battle to discover the link between seemingly unrelated hints.

In the episode's opening round of sequences, participants were challenged with working out what connects Karl Lagerfeld, weightlifters, Claudia Winkleman and Fagin. During a bonus opportunity, one competitor correctly identified "fingerless gloves."

Victoria's revelation

Victoria subsequently revealed that the deceased fashion designer disliked the appearance of his hands, while weightlifters use them for grip. She continued: "Claudia Winkleman, fashion icon, everybody wants to wear what she wears. It's fingerless gloves on the Traitors and Fagin on the end."

Victoria then spoke about her friendship with the ex-Strictly presenter and quipped: "As someone whose had lunch with Claudia Winkleman on many occasions, I'd say there are lots of connections between her and Fagin." While the teams erupted with laughter, Victoria quickly corrected herself: "That's so unfair, she's actually very quick to pick up the bill, I should say that."

Audience reaction

BBC audiences flocked to the comments section with their responses to the presenter's revelation, as one declared: "No one wants to wear what Claudia Winkelman wears." Another stood up for Claudia's style choices and replied: "I do! Trouble is, she's thinner and better looking than I am. I love the clothes that she wears in Traitors." Meanwhile, another person observed: "Victoria and Claudia having lunch! I'd buy tickets for that!"

Decades-long friendship

Victoria and Claudia have been "best friends" for decades, with their bond dating back to childhood. The Traitors host even served as a bridesmaid when Victoria married comedian David Mitchell in 2012.

The Only Connect presenter has previously said: "Claudia's the most totally loveable person in the world. She's super-smart, quick, clever and funny, but combines that with incredible kindness and loyalty. She wears her fame very lightly because she doesn't take it seriously; she works hard, but she's committed to a set of priorities that puts family and friendship first."

Meanwhile, Claudia has described Victoria as her "best friend in the whole world," telling The Times that she's a "cleverer, funnier, sexier version" of herself.

Only Connect airs on Mondays from 8pm on BBC Two.
