Victoria Beckham has written an emotional letter to her 18-year-old self, revealing the deep insecurities she faced as a teenager. In a piece for Vogue magazine, the 42-year-old fashion designer and former Spice Girl recalls feeling like a 'fat, spotty, ugly teenager' who doubted her dreams of fame.
Beckham, then Victoria Adams, struggled with acne, weight concerns, and a lack of confidence while studying at the Laine Theatre Arts college in Surrey. She writes: 'I know you are struggling right now. You are not the prettiest, or the thinnest, or the best at dancing... You have never properly fitted in.' She also describes being placed at the back of a show in a 'humiliatingly bright purple Lycra leotard,' possibly because she was considered too plump.
Her teenage years were marked by bullying at secondary school, where she was teased for her 'ski jump nose,' acne, and her family's wealth, which saw her dropped off in a Rolls-Royce. By 18, she felt a 'complete wreck.' Despite rejections from modelling jobs and teachers who told her she would never make it, Beckham persevered, joining the band Touch at 20, which later became the Spice Girls.
In her letter, Beckham also reflects on her lifelong passion for fashion, which led to painful bunions from years of wearing high heels. She now embraces trainers, having debuted a new collection at New York Fashion Week in February. Her clothing line commands up to £3,000 per dress, and she looks back fondly on past fashion faux pas, including matching Gucci leather outfits with husband David Beckham in 1999.
She writes: 'You are going to have so much fun with your clothes. PVC catsuits; chokers that say absurd things; weird spiky blonde hair. It will never occur to you that you appear ridiculous.' Beckham encourages her younger self to express freely, noting that fashion will take on added stature as she matures.
