Vernon Kay 'outed' after graffiti appears

BBC Radio 2 presenter Vernon Kay was left red-faced when he was asked live on air about graffiti appearing around the UK claiming he listens to 90s pop group Steps in the bath.

The Bolton-born presenter humorously claimed he's been 'exposed' after being questioned live on BBC Radio 2 about the cryptic graffiti, which hints at his musical preferences during bath time.

Graffiti question on air

Ellie Brennan, who delivers travel news on BBC Radio 2's breakfast and morning shows, quizzed Vernon about rumours that he's a massive fan of 90s pop sensation Steps, following a mention in the recently spotted graffiti.

"I've got something to bring up with you," Ellie chuckled. "Have you seen this thing going around about you online?"

Vernon responded: "Oh, it's not the scrolling under the bridge, is it?" Realising she'd hit the nail on the head, he muttered: "Yeah..." before Ellie elaborated: "If you haven't seen it, this is going everywhere. There's graffiti that says 'Vernon Kay listens to Steps in the bath'... Is that true?"

Vernon's response

Attempting to demonstrate his Steps expertise, the former Family Fortunes presenter sang several lines from their chart-topper 'Tragedy', before quipping: "Yeah, I've been outed!" to Ellie's delight.

Vernon was unveiled as the new host of the station's mid-morning show back in February 2023, stepping into the shoes of Ken Bruce, who had helmed the programme for an impressive 31 years, in May of the same year.

Other graffiti in West Denton

According to figures from research organisation RAJAR, the 52-year-old now draws in a weekly audience of 6.8 million to his show.

But Vernon isn't the only celebrity being mentioned around a small town near Newcastle. The peculiar scrawlings are appearing daily in West Denton, Newcastle, with residents and social media users wondering who might be responsible for the strange 'artwork'.

Other allegations daubed onto walls in the neighbourhood include 'Lorraine Kelly is barred from Wetherspoons for stealing cutlery', and 'Stacey Solomon gives Joe a sticker for helping with the dishes'.
