Vernon Kay nearly spoils Celebrity Traitors on air, insists 'it's not my fault'
Vernon Kay nearly spoils Celebrity Traitors live on BBC Radio 2

BBC Radio 2 presenter Vernon Kay narrowly avoided an on-air blunder when he almost gave away a Celebrity Traitors spoiler during his show, but he insisted "it's not my fault".

Near-miss during Traitors discussion

The new series of Celebrity Traitors began less than a week ago, and it has already gripped British audiences. Presented by Claudia Winkleman, the current series features actor Michael Sheen, comedian Romesh Ranganathan and former model Jerry Hall. Actor Richard E. Grant is proving to be an early favourite for viewers.

Despite the show only starting last Thursday, one celebrity has already been kicked out – and that fact almost landed Vernon Kay in hot water. The DJ insisted "it's not my fault" as he worried about "loads of complaints" when he nearly committed an on-air gaffe.

Quick fade saves the day

Chatting to his team on Tuesday, October 6, Vernon enquired: "Has anyone left The Traitors castle yet?" His colleague Ellie Brennan responded: "Not yet, but we mustn't do spoilers." Producer Phil McGarvey then interjected: "Someone has left The Traitors castle. Catch up on iPlayer."

Vernon, 52, was greatly relieved that he hadn't revealed any plot details. He said: "Good job the mic was down then. Good job I was quick on the fade, we would have loads and loads of complaints on the texts. Well done pal." His producer then admitted he had forgotten what had occurred despite there being only two episodes.

Vernon pledges not to spoil

Vernon pledged he wouldn't spoil it for any potential viewers who haven't yet discovered what unfolded. He declared: "Right, chill. It's not my fault people don't get it within 24 hours. When was it last on?" Ellie informed him it was last Friday, prompting Vernon to reply: "Well, you've had lots of time. I won't spoil it. I won't spoil it. What a show."

Meanwhile, Vernon was left red-faced when he was asked live on air about graffiti appearing around the UK claiming he listens to 90s pop group Steps in the bath. The presenter was unveiled as the new host of the station's mid-morning show back in February 2023, stepping into the shoes of Ken Bruce, who had helmed the programme for 31 years, in May of the same year.

Steps graffiti question

According to figures from research organisation RAJAR, the 52-year-old now draws in a weekly audience of 6.8 million to his show. So, there would have been millions tuning in when Ellie Brennan, known to listeners for delivering travel news on BBC Radio 2's breakfast and morning shows, quizzed Vernon about rumours that he's a massive fan of 90s pop sensation Steps, following a mention in the recently spotted graffiti.

"I've got something to bring up with you," Ellie chuckled. "Have you seen this thing going around about you online?" Vernon responded: "Oh, it's not the scrolling under the bridge, is it?" Realising she'd hit the nail on the head, he muttered: "Yeah..." before Ellie elaborated: "If you haven't seen it, this is going everywhere. There's graffiti that says 'Vernon Kay listens to Steps in the bath'... Is that true?"

Attempting to demonstrate his Steps expertise, the former Family Fortunes presenter sang several lines from their chart-topper 'Tragedy', before quipping: "Yeah, I've been outed!" to Ellie's delight.
