TV Chef Dom Taylor Dies Suddenly at 44; Tributes Pour In

Celebrity chef and restaurateur Dom Taylor has died suddenly at the age of 44, his team has confirmed. Taylor rose to fame after winning Channel 4's Five Star Kitchen: Britain's Next Great Chef in 2023, and later opened his own acclaimed Caribbean restaurant, The Good Front Room.

Restaurant confirms sudden passing

The Good Front Room, which began as a 10-month residency at The Langham hotel in London before moving to a permanent site in Dalston, Hackney, announced the news on Instagram. The post described Taylor as a visionary whose “bold, joyful approach to celebrating the Caribbean cuisine of his childhood brought a fresh and exciting voice to London’s restaurant scene.”

“We are deeply saddened to share the news of the sudden passing of our founder, Chef Dom Taylor,” the statement read. “His passion, talent and generosity touched so many people, and his legacy will continue to inspire those who had the privilege of knowing him and experiencing his food. He will be deeply missed.”

The restaurant said it would remain open to honour Taylor’s legacy, and asked for privacy for his family and friends during the difficult time.

Outpouring of tributes

Fans, colleagues and food writers have paid tribute to Taylor. Craig and Shaun McAnuff called him “a true pioneer,” while journalist Paula Akpan recalled interviewing him earlier this year, saying she was “so moved by how beautifully he channelled the memories and culinary traditions of the matriarchs in his family into The Good Front Room.”

Food writer Melissa Thompson sent “love and strength to the team,” adding that “Dom was a very special person.” A former colleague said Taylor gave them their “first job in the cheffing world” and taught them so much.

Recent social media post

Just five weeks before his death, Taylor posted on social media about his love for seeing people come together at his restaurant. “One of the things I love most about The Good Front Room is seeing people come together around a table. Friends catching up, families sharing food, people meeting for the first time and leaving as friends,” he wrote. “That’s what we’ve tried to create here. A place that feels welcoming, relaxed and full of good energy.”
