Tributes have been paid to Nigel Cabourn, a world-renowned menswear designer from Tyneside, who has died at the age of 77. Known for his authentic heritage British clothing and vintage-inspired outerwear, Cabourn’s attention to detail and quality defined a career spanning nearly six decades.

Peaceful Passing

Nigel passed away peacefully on the morning of June 11, surrounded by loved ones at his home, a family friend confirmed to ChronicleLive. Born in Peterlee, he had lived in Newcastle since 1962 and began his studies at Northumbria University.

Career Highlights

Throughout his career, Cabourn collaborated with major brands including Ted Baker, Next, Barbour, Berghaus, and Rohan. In the 1980s, he manufactured menswear tailoring under the Cricket brand, blending formal and sportswear to global acclaim.

In a recent film with Northumbria University, Cabourn recalled making his first piece—a two-tone blouson in the early 1970s while studying. “Without being able to afford fabric, I put it together using fabrics from my mum's curtains… and totally by hand,” he said. “Many pieces followed but the one that changed things and skyrocketed the brand was the US4 flight jacket, with 250,000 orders placed from one tradeshow. The US4 has since been released for SS26.”

Debenhams Deal

In 2005, the Evening Chronicle reported that Cabourn was set to become a new name at Debenhams, one of the UK’s largest department stores, with a 100-piece range designed at his studio on Claremont Road, Newcastle. It was the first time in a decade that Debenhams had chosen a new designer for its menswear line. The utility-based range, described as a Nigel Cabourn ‘diffusion line’ combining heritage and 1950s sportswear, was showcased in 80 Debenham stores nationwide.

Cabourn’s legacy as a pioneer of heritage menswear will be remembered by the fashion industry and fans alike.
