Michael Knightly, a longtime employee of the renowned racehorse breeding operation Coolmore Stud, has died in a road traffic collision. The father of two, aged in his 50s, was killed in an accident on the R505 near Dundrum in Tipperary, Ireland, on Thursday, July 16, 2026. The collision occurred shortly before 5:50 pm, and police have urged anyone with information to contact Tipperary Garda Station.
Colleagues and Community Pay Tribute
Coolmore's UK representative Kevin Buckley paid tribute on social media, writing on X: "Michael Knightly, a gentleman, a friend and a colleague. May he rest in peace." Knightly had worked at Coolmore Stud for more than two decades and was also actively involved in local sports clubs, including Fethard GAA and Slievenamon Celtic Kilsheelan United Football Club.
Fethard GAA club expressed their condolences in a statement: "Michael was not only our club treasurer for the past 6 years but was also a valued member of our club. Michael’s contribution to Fethard GAA was invaluable and his true commitment to the club was a testament to the gentleman he was. Michael’s presence will be sadly missed by the whole community of Fethard. As a mark of respect all games and training have been cancelled this weekend. May he rest in peace."
Funeral Arrangements and Family
Michael's funeral will take place on Monday in the Augustinian Abbey Church in Tipperary, followed by burial in Calvary Cemetery. His death notice on RIP.ie read: "Knightly, Michael, Killerk North, Fethard, Co Tipperary and formerly of Shronell House, Lattin, Co Tipperary, July 16th 2026, in a tragic accident. Beloved husband of Áine, loving father of Alec and Sam, adored son of Joe and the late Mary and much-loved brother of Kate and Joseph. Predeceased by his mother Mary and brothers-in-law Richard and Roddy."
The notice stipulates family flowers only, with donations in lieu, if desired, to the Irish Injured Jockey's Fund.
Football Club Remembers Supportive Father
A spokesperson for Slievenamon Celtic Kilsheelan United Football Club also paid tribute: "The club would like to send our deepest condolences to Alec Knightly and all his family and friends in the tragic passing of his Dad, Michael. Alec has been a great servant to our club keeping goal for our youths team the previous 3 seasons. A very consistent performer with a great attitude and dedication to improve. His Dad Michael was always present on match day's with a friendly smile, followed by a chat. He gave great encouragement to Alec and his team mates at every game. We will miss seeing Michael on match days. Our thoughts and prayers are with all Michael's family and friends at this difficult time. RIP Michael."
