Former Chelsea star Andy Townsend has criticised Liam Delap, saying the striker is 'not anywhere near the level required' at Stamford Bridge. Townsend spoke as Chelsea pursue Brighton's Danny Welbeck and Brentford's Jordan Henderson.

Chelsea have already signed Marco Palestra from Atalanta and completed a British-record £117m deal for Aston Villa midfielder Morgan Rogers. The Blues are now targeting experienced Premier League players, with Welbeck and Henderson identified as top targets. Talks for Welbeck, 35, are at an 'advanced' stage and he is keen on the move. Henderson, 36, is sidelined with a broken arm but Chelsea are among the leading contenders.

Townsend told talkSPORT: 'There's good reasons for both. Danny is one of those players who has got better with age. Brighton have managed him well, and he had a particularly good season. He's never been prolific but scores important goals.' On Delap and Nicolas Jackson, he added: 'Liam Delap is clearly not anywhere near the level required. Jackson I never thought was good enough. Welbeck would be a major improvement.' Townsend also said Henderson signing makes sense if Enzo Fernandez leaves, noting both players are 'good pros' and 'good guys in the dressing room'.
