The transformation of the iconic Touchstones art gallery in Rochdale will now be completed by summer 2027, Rochdale Borough Council has confirmed. The Grade-II listed venue has been undergoing major redevelopment since 2024, with the original reopening scheduled for 2025 delayed due to unforeseen structural issues.
Contractor Appointed for Final Phase
Rochdale Council has appointed Schofield and Sons to complete the remaining work, which includes finishing the first-floor galleries and final roof repairs. The previous completion date of spring 2027 has been pushed back to summer 2027 after contractors discovered the roof was in worse condition than anticipated.
According to local authorities, additional work is needed to safeguard the building's future, including re-slating the roof, upgrading insulation, renewing flashings and soakers, improving guttering, installing new lightning protection, and replacing dormer windows.
Completed and Planned Features
Most of the work has already been finished. New features include a flexible performance space with a 130-seat studio, meeting rooms, education facilities, reception and dining areas, collections space, a kitchen, and artwork storage. The first-floor galleries will house major exhibitions and significant collections.

Part of Wider Creative District
The Touchstones project is a key part of establishing a creative district in Rochdale town centre, which includes the refurbishment of Rochdale Town Hall, the new town hall square, the Fire Up digital and creative co-working space, new artist workspaces on Richard Street, and new public art, signage, and marketing.
The project has been funded by the Cultural Development Fund (a DCMS fund administered by Arts Council England) and Rochdale Borough Council, as part of major investment into arts and culture across the borough. Touchstones became one of Arts Council England’s National Portfolio Organisations for the first time in 2023.
