Spider-Man star Tom Holland has admitted that supporting Tottenham Hotspur is 'one of the worst decisions' he has ever made. The British actor, who returns as the Marvel web-slinger in Brand New Day, revealed a Premier League faux pas while appearing on the Dish from Waitrose podcast.
Supporting Arsenal in the Champions League final
Holland, a Tottenham fan, said: 'I tell you what, I will say, I watched the Champions League final. I watched it with my brother, and I'll get crucified for saying this as a Tottenham fan, but I supported Arsenal.'
A childhood decision that backfired
The actor explained that his allegiance to Spurs began by accident as a child when the family saw how poorly the team was doing. 'I was always more into rugby. I played rugby as a kid, and I just always used to follow more of the rugby,' he said.
'But when I started working on film sets, it's all anyone talks about on a Monday morning is the football over the weekend. So, I kind of got a bit tired of being left out.'
Holland said his brother Harry was the first to pick a club but avoided Chelsea, Arsenal, and Manchester United because he didn't want to be a 'glory hunter.' When another brother, Sam, chose to support Tottenham with Harry, Harry warned him not to do it because of the difficulty. Sam then picked Arsenal, and another sibling followed. Holland said: 'So, when I decided to get into football, I couldn't leave Harry on his own, so I picked Tottenham. And it's probably one of the worst decisions I've ever made.'
Never tired of playing Spider-Man
Regarding his latest Spider-Man film, Holland said: 'It's honestly like, it's such a pleasure [playing Spider-Man] and it is not something that I think I will ever get tired of.' He added that he enjoyed more responsibility on the new movie, collaborating with the writers and director, and looking at what fans wanted online. 'I felt like when I was in the room with the writers, I was like the representative of the fans. The movie's great. I'm like super, super proud of it. It's really fun. It's super funny. But really, I think, the most emotional version of any of these movies that we've ever made.'
