The trailer for Tom Cruise's latest film, Digger, has been released, showing the actor transformed into a balding, pot-bellied character who is described as "the most powerful man in the world." The satirical black comedy is directed by Alejandro G Inarritu, known for Birdman and The Revenant.
Plot and First Look
A synopsis for the film teases: "The most powerful man in the world embarks on a frantic mission to prove he is humanity's saviour before the disaster he's unleashed destroys everything." The trailer opens with Cruise's character, Digger Rockwell, saying in a voiceover: "Everything changes. One day you're a cat, or a king. Next day, you're just ashes in a box."
In the first clip, an unrecognisable Cruise—with a Southern accent, pot belly, and thinning white hair—walks shirtless through a walk-in wardrobe. He is told that his business dealings have caused a glacier in Greenland to shift five feet, to which he responds by misunderstanding the severity: "That glacier over there in Greenland shifts five feet. Now, this desk in front of me is bigger than five feet. My dick is a tenth of that size. What? Do you want me to shut down a billion-dollar platform over something 10 times the size of my dick?"
Digger's Priorities and Conflict
Digger appears more concerned about his ill cat, which is given between "two weeks and five minutes" to live. When an employee warns him about the glacier, he lashes out: "I know perfectly well what's going on because I'm paying for the whole thing… I'm paying for your f***ing 90% Hungarian goose down winter jacket. I'm paying your salary. If you want to shut it down, say it!"
Pressure mounts as an impending global ecological disaster—involving a tsunami that has damaged nuclear plants—threatens. John Goodman plays the US president, who declares that Digger "got us into this mess… and will get us out of it." Digger becomes incensed when told it could cost up to 18 trillion dollars to fix the situation, with the proposed solution being to drop a missile on the glacier.

The film also stars Riz Ahmed, Jesse Plemons, Michael Stuhlbarg, Sandra Huller, Sophie Wilde, Emma D'Arcy, Burn Gorman, and Robert John Burke. Digger is scheduled for release in cinemas on October 2, 2026.
