Tina Malone was visibly emotional during an appearance on ITV's Good Morning Britain, where she discussed the death of her husband Paul, a former serviceman who took his own life last year. The actress, best known for her role in Brookside, became tearful as she recounted the challenges Paul faced after his military service.
Paul served in Iraq, Afghanistan, and Northern Ireland during his decade-long military career and was later diagnosed with PTSD. In the final months of his life, his condition worsened to the point where professionals advised against him returning home. Malone admitted she had concealed his depression due to her public profile, delaying medical intervention.
Describing their relationship, Malone said: 'We would have been 15 years married in August just gone, we were inseparable.' She recalled sitting with him during panic attacks and night-time episodes, though he abstained from substances. She revealed that Paul attempted suicide twice in 2023 before finally dying by suicide last year.
The interview saw Malone appealing for better support for veterans: 'There seems to be a lack of protocol for veterans. Things take time to implement.' She sobbed as she questioned why veterans are left homeless, urging more funding for charities.
Presenters Susanna Reid and Ed Balls offered support as Malone spoke of the strain on their family, including their ten-year-old daughter. The Good Morning Britain team highlighted the Samaritans helpline for those in distress.
