The One Show Hosts Pay Tribute to David Hockney

The One Show presenters Clara Amfo and Roman Kemp led heartfelt tributes to the late British artist David Hockney, who passed away at the age of 88. The hosts paused during the programme on Friday, June 12, to honor the iconic painter following the announcement of his death.

Emotional Moment on The One Show

Roman Kemp began by saying: "We'd like to take a moment to mention today's sad news that legendary artist David Hockney has died at the age of 88." Clara Amfo added: "He truly was one of the most influential artists of his generation."

The show then aired a short clip from a 2023 interview with Hockney, where he reflected on his life, work, and family. Returning to the studio, Clara said: "An incredible man and our thoughts go out to his friends and family."

Tributes from Royalty and Government

Hockney's publicist confirmed the news earlier that day, stating: "The celebrated British artist David Hockney, one of the most important figures in contemporary art in both the 20th and 21st centuries, passed away peacefully at home on 11 June 2026, one month short of his 89th birthday."

King Charles expressed his sadness, saying he and the Queen were "greatly saddened" by the loss of "a giant of the world of art and painting, a Yorkshireman through and through, and a dear friend and inspiration to so many." He added: "David was one of life's true originals; one who wore his genius as lightly as those beloved yellow Crocs of his that helped brighten Palace occasions. I trust they will see him tread safely into the hereafter as we mourn a man whose irrepressible charm, talent and constant innovation will be most sorely missed, but whose dazzling creativity lives on in galleries and museums around the world."

Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer also paid tribute, saying he was "saddened" to hear of Hockney's death, describing him as "one of Britain's most celebrated artists." A Downing Street spokesperson added that Hockney's "vivid, instantly recognisable work influenced generations of artists, and the prime minister's thoughts are with his friends and family."

The One Show airs weeknights from 7pm on BBC One and iPlayer.
