The Dark viewers demand series 2 after cliffhanger

ITV viewers are demanding another instalment of The Dark after the chilling crime-drama came to an end on Monday night (July 27). The series, set across the Scottish Highlands, follows DI Monica Kennedy (Laura Donnelly) and DC Conor Crawford (Mark Rowley) as they try to catch a serial killer targeting young boys. The identity of the killer was revealed to be headteacher Kyle Ward (Brian Ferguson), but the series ended with a dramatic cliffhanger.

Cliffhanger ending sparks calls for series two

Throughout the six episodes, fans learned snippets of Monica's past, including her involvement in the Burning Light cult and her daughter Lucy with the cult leader. Although she escaped the cult, the finale showed a letter addressed to Lucy reading: "My darling daughter, it is time to let the light in."

Viewers took to social media to express their desire for another series. One person said: "Ooo I do hope there will be another series of #TheDark it was a really good show." Another shared: "Give me another series of that please, ITV #TheDark." A third commented: "With that ending 100% a 2nd series is coming." A fourth wrote: "What the f**k noooo it can't end like that!?????!!!!"

Cast and writer tease further exploration

Speaking about Monica's unknown background, Laura Donnelly said: "Monica's whole backstory, the way it has shaped who she is, there are still, even as we finish season one, there are still tonnes of question marks about that, and a long, long way to explore." She praised writer Matt Hartley's pacing, noting that unlike many detective shows, the writer didn't reveal everything quickly. Mark Rowley added: "It's nice just to prolong that, to keep the audience hooked in for longer… It's fascinating, right? Because I don't know any of the other detective [shows] that [have] explored a character like that."

The Dark is available to watch on ITVX.
