An 18-year-old has sparked debate after refusing to change her puppy's name despite repeated pleas from her parents. The teen insists she will not give in, even after her mother said she would eventually 'hate the dog' because of the name.
Family adopts puppy, name dispute begins
The teenager explained on Reddit that her family recently adopted a two-month-old terrier mix after their chihuahua-pomeranian cross died from kidney failure. They had gone to the local animal shelter just to look, with her dad insisting they would not bring a dog home. But they fell in love with the 'tiniest little terrier mix' and adopted him, naming him Nugget.
While the teen and her 19-year-old brother thought Nugget was 'silly and adorable', their parents were not keen. Her mother and father, who immigrated from India, felt the name would be difficult for them to say and suggested Indian names like Kuttappa and Aloo.
Mother's warning escalates dispute
The teen argued that because they live in America, it would be easier for vets, groomers and pet sitters if the puppy kept his original name. Despite repeatedly refusing to change it, the disagreement persisted. Her mother warned: 'If I hate the dog's name, I'll eventually hate the dog.' The teen replied that her mother chose to adopt the dog and had been helping care for him. Her mother then said: 'If you won't change the dog's name, it will be a personal attack against me.'

Unsure whether she was being unreasonable, the teen asked Reddit for advice. One user said the parents likely paid adoption fees and would be primary caretakers, so they should name the puppy. Another suggested a name that works in both languages, like Samosa (Sammy) or Ravi. A third user commented that everyone seemed inconsiderate of each other.
