Teenage daughter hates us and is making family life miserable
Teen daughter hates us, making family life miserable

A parent has written to Coleen Nolan seeking advice about their 16-year-old daughter who has been making family life miserable. The daughter, who recently finished her exams, has been starting arguments over small things and threatening to leave when told no.

Daughter goes missing after argument

On one occasion, the daughter went missing after an argument and turned off her phone's location. The parents drove around town searching for her before she eventually called to be picked up, saying she was just 'taking a walk' at 9pm on a Tuesday night. The parent describes the shouting, name-calling, door slamming and sulking as 'horrendous'. Despite her behavior at home, she has always been happy at school, has good friends and is lovely with everyone else.

Coleen's advice

Coleen says it's mostly down to her age and that many parents can relate. She explains that teens often take out anger on loved ones because it's a safe space. She advises encouraging honest conversation, reminding her of love and support, and not reacting when she acts out, as she expects a row. Coleen concludes: 'All teens push boundaries, but you've got to hold your nerve and create an environment where they feel safe coming to you.'
