Taylor Swift suffered heartbreak on her wedding day following the death of one of her closest allies. The superstar singer, 36, married NFL star Travis Kelce, also 36, at Madison Square Garden in New York on Friday, July 5, 2026. However, Kirk Schwabe, 69, who taught Swift in high school and later became her bodyguard, died of renal cancer on July 3, just two days before the ceremony.
Schwabe's Role in Swift's Life
According to The Telegraph, Schwabe served as a Chicago police officer before teaching Swift criminal justice at Henderson High School in Nashville, Tennessee, from 2004 to 2006. At the request of Swift's family, he later became her bodyguard, supporting her as she rose to fame. Swift honored Schwabe by naming her character's teacher Mr. Schwabe in the 2010 romantic comedy Valentine's Day.
Final Interview and Advice
In an interview before Swift's wedding, Schwabe recalled the advice he gave a young Taylor: 'You're a superstar. This is not fun and games no more. You are it. Everything keeps going up and up and up, and the sky's the limit for you.' He also described watching her rise to fame as a 'panic,' saying, 'If anything happens, I'm the guy... We got four or 500 people in here and I got extra security guards, but I don't know a lot of those guys who got hired.'
Schwabe's Approval and Legacy
Schwabe left the job after a few years, citing exhaustion, but remained proud of Swift. His family confirmed he was happy she was getting married and trusted her judgment. In his final interview, he said, 'I do trust Taylor's judgment. She knows what's best.'
The Wedding
Swift and Kelce's wedding brought New York to a standstill, with huge billboards erected in the city announcing the union. Guests were sworn to secrecy, but AMC Entertainment CEO Adam Aron appeared to reveal details about the decor, dress, and first kiss on X. The Mirror has contacted Swift's representative for comment.
