Taylor Swift's Opalite Music Video Features Secret Dance Scene Surprise for Domhnall Gleeson
Taylor Swift sent her global fanbase into an absolute frenzy last week with the release of her latest music video for the track Opalite. The video, which boasts a star-studded cast from her October appearance on The Graham Norton Show, has captivated audiences with its nostalgic 1990s aesthetic and whimsical narrative.
A Dream Come True and a Secret Kept
The genesis of the project occurred during that now-iconic television appearance. The singer's face visibly lit up after Irish actor Domhnall Gleeson confessed, in a light-hearted manner, that it was his dream to end up in a Taylor Swift music video. Swift revealed that this offhand comment instantly sparked the entire creative concept for the Opalite visual.
In a delightful twist, Swift decided to keep a major component of the video a secret from Gleeson until the very moment of filming. She did not inform him about their now-iconic dance scene, where the pair don matching sparkling blue tracksuits for a cheesy, heartfelt number.
"I didn't tell Dom he was going to dance," Swift joked in behind-the-scenes footage. "I just thought it would be better to tell him in person." Gleeson, reacting to the surprise, added humorously, "This dance thing is new, I want everyone to know that."
Extended Versions and a Full Cast of Cameos
Always renowned for going above and beyond for her devoted fans, the superstar shared two extended versions of the music video on Friday. These special editions are packed with additional content, including behind-the-scenes moments, dance rehearsals, and more footage from the hysterical shoot.
Writing on social media, Swift expressed, "I never want to forget a single detail of this hysterical shoot, and now I don’t have to! Excited to share more of the Opalite Music Video with two extended versions full of dance lessons, our phenomenal cameos, camcorder footage, gigantic scrunchies & fanny pack angles!"
The catchy video features not only Domhnall Gleeson but the entire ensemble from that Graham Norton Show episode. Viewers are treated to appearances from Lewis Capaldi, Greta Lee, Jodie Turner-Smith, Cillian Murphy, and of course, host Graham Norton himself. Behind-the-scenes shots show the group in various roles, with Capaldi as a photographer, Lee as a singer, and Turner-Smith as a fitness instructor.
The Whimsical Narrative of Opalite
Reflecting on the video's narrative, Swift explained she had pondered the concept for about a year. "For like a year I was like 'What would I do for the Opalite video?' and then I was on The Graham Norton Show..." she said. The storyline is a surreal romantic comedy.
It initially follows both Swift and Gleeson's characters trapped in toxic, absurd relationships—Swift with a literal rock and Gleeson with a prickly cactus that hurts him daily. "The whole cactus as a girlfriend thing is complicated," Gleeson quipped. "But it's nice, I think the idea of finding the right person is the whole thing."
Their liberation and subsequent meeting are facilitated by a ‘magical’ spray bottle labelled Opalite. Graham Norton appears in a scene promoting a different spray, while Cillian Murphy is featured in a fictional advert for Opalite itself. The video culminates in the pair falling in love before their unforgettable dance sequence.
Swift revealed the idea "crash landed into my imagination" during the show and noted that the track Opalite from her latest album, The Life Of A Showgirl, had always sounded very "commercial-like" to her, hence the video's inspiration. She expressed immense gratitude, stating, "To my delight, everyone from the show made the effort to time travel back to the Nineties with us and help with this video... I had more fun than I ever imagined."
