Sydney Martin reveals non-acting dreams as fans praise performance

Coronation Street star Sydney Martin has shared what she would have wanted to do if she didn't become an actress, as her performance in the ITV soap continues to be praised.

Sydney Martin's Non-Acting Dreams

In a TikTok Q&A, Martin said: 'As much as I like talking about acting, someone asked me, 'What is something other than acting you want to accomplish in life?' Two things spring to mind straight away. I wanna be a mummy. Not right now, but I want a family one day, and yeah, I can't wait for that when that time comes, and also I want to travel. I want to go see the world. They're kind of my two biggest things that are on the top of my list.'

Asked about an alternative career, she said: 'Sticking with the same theme, 'In another life, if I didn't go into acting, what career would I choose?' Interior design. I nearly did do interior design. I applied for a uni course to do it alongside two drama schools, and then just happened to get into drama school. So that was the decision I made. I think I really enjoyed that. I love watching Interior Design Masters. And another one, a zookeeper. Always wanted to be a zookeeper. I love animals. I just wasn't very good at science. So maybe in another world, I'll be better at science.'

Betsy's Stroke Storyline

Martin plays Betsy Swain, who recently suffered two strokes caused by a blood clot from neck artery damage after being strangled by boyfriend Dylan Wilson during consensual sex. In the coming months, viewers will see Betsy's challenging recovery as she transitions from hospital to home. Corrie says the storyline highlights the physical and emotional impact of a stroke at a young age.

It’s my favourite one right now in a soap #Corrie #Swarla.' @LadyReignFC added: 'I've gotten so used to Sydney Martin being a fabulous actress I don't think I mention it enough but she's absolutely been killing it. This storyline is easily her biggest yet & she's been fantastic. #corrie.'

From Tesco to Corrie

Martin previously told the Manchester Evening News how she got into drama school during the pandemic, graduating in 2023. 'I grafted and somehow I got here. I don't know how,' she said. She auditioned for smaller roles before landing Betsy: 'In January this year, I went up for two smaller roles for a couple of episodes... I didn't get them but it was great to be put in front of them twice but literally two weeks after, they were like, 'Do you want to audition for a series regular?' and I was like, 'Yeah!'' The process took two months, including self-tapes and screen tests with Vicky Myers. She got the call while preparing to watch Pitch Perfect 3 with flatmates. 'I got a phone call, ran into the corner of a flat and was like, 'It's going to be a no, keep watching. Just let me have my moment!' But my agent phoned me and said, 'Go hand in your notice!' I was doing six days a week at Tesco, which is quite the career change!'
