Susanna Reid announces summer break from Good Morning Britain

Susanna Reid has been supported by her Good Morning Britain co-stars after announcing she is taking a break from the ITV programme. The presenter, who fronted the show alongside Ed Balls on Wednesday, July 22, confirmed she will be off-air for several weeks over the summer, with stand-ins taking over her presenting duties.

Out of office

Susanna posted a picture on Instagram at the end of Wednesday's programme, confirming: "SHOES OFF, OUT OF OFFICE ON!" She also paid tribute to a colleague leaving the team after a decade. She said: "Time for my summer break - but also time to say goodbye to our wonderful Director @stuearl who has been the champion of this programme for a decade. Thank you for everything Stuart."

Return date

Susanna continued by saying she and Ed Balls would return on September 1 "after our travels" before thanking viewers for watching. She concluded: "THANK YOU to our amazing viewers for watching and for contacting us and sharing your views - never a 'waste of time' being on this brilliant programme and thanks to everyone on Team."

Awkward moment

Susanna’s announcement referred to an awkward comment made by Reform MP Robert Jenrick earlier in the programme. After an interview with Susanna and Ed Balls, Jenrick could be heard off-camera saying: "That was a waste of time." Ed quickly disagreed, replying: "I think it wasn't a waste of time. I think Robert Jenrick gave us very clear answers on the police investigation. It's not a waste of time for him to make clear that he believes there's no police investigation. So, it was good he came on the programme."

Social media support

When the moment was shared on social media, Carol Vorderman commented with laughing emojis. One follower replied: "Classy," while another said: "Maybe don’t bother inviting him on the programme next time." Among those supporting Susanna after her break announcement was ITV co-star Kate Garraway, who wrote: "We'll miss you both @susannareid100 @edballs and @stuearl - we'll miss you so much - good luck with your next adventure!!!" ITV newsreader Paul Brand added: "Have the best time! Xx" Strictly's La Voix also commented: "Pyjamas for me and slippers for you! It's contagious causal glamour!"

Good Morning Britain airs weekdays from 6am on ITV1 and ITVX.
