A jury has concluded that Strictly Come Dancing star Robin Windsor took his own life, with the inquest hearing he was "vulnerable to rejection both emotionally and professionally." The professional dancer was 44 years old when he was discovered deceased in a hotel room in Shepherd's Bush, west London, in February 2024.
Inquest Findings and Contributing Factors
After approximately two hours of deliberation at West London Coroner's Court, the jury foreperson delivered the verdict on Thursday. They stated that the probable causes were "an accumulation of many attributes to depression." The jury highlighted that Robin Jamie Windsor suffered from childhood trauma, which made him particularly susceptible to rejection in both personal and career contexts.
Key Factors in Mental Health Deterioration
The jury identified multiple contributing factors to Windsor's mental health decline, which ultimately led to his suicide. These included loneliness, a lack of emotional maturity, the pressure of mounting debts, and insufficient consistent mental health care and support. Additionally, recurring heartache was noted as a significant element in his deterioration.
Jurors heard that Windsor had left a note expressing how his treatment after being dropped from Strictly Come Dancing "destroyed" him. This revelation underscores the profound impact professional setbacks had on his well-being.
Strictly Come Dancing Career and Aftermath
Robin Windsor joined the popular BBC show Strictly Come Dancing in 2010, where he danced with notable partners such as actresses Patsy Kensit, Anita Dobson, and Lisa Riley, as well as Dragons' Den star Deborah Meaden. He participated in four series until 2013.
In 2014, Windsor was unable to perform due to a back injury, and he was subsequently dropped from the show in 2015. Despite this, he made a final appearance in the Christmas special that year, partnering with TV presenter Alison Hammond.
Circumstances of Death
The inquest confirmed that Windsor died after consuming alcohol and a drug, with his body found in the hotel room. The jury's findings emphasize the complex interplay of personal and professional challenges that contributed to this tragic outcome.
This case highlights the critical importance of mental health support in the entertainment industry, particularly for individuals facing high-pressure careers and public scrutiny. The verdict serves as a somber reminder of the vulnerabilities that can underlie public personas.
