Stephen Graham replaces Dexter Fletcher as McDonald's voice

McDonald's fans are only now discovering the real reason Stephen Graham took over from Dexter Fletcher as the voice of the brand's adverts. The change happened in April, when Graham, 52, from Kirkby, Merseyside, replaced the 60-year-old London-born director and actor after two decades.

Why McDonald's made the switch

Reports from QSR Media and Campaign Live indicate the main motivation was to build a stronger connection with younger British consumers, even though Graham is only eight years younger than Fletcher. The brand also saw Graham's voice as having a broad, cross-generational appeal across the UK.

Hannah Pain, marketing and menu director at McDonald's UK and Ireland, explained that the company is moving towards a more contemporary, culture-led approach. Graham was chosen for his blend of "cultural credibility" and "everyday warmth", which aligns with genuine, insight-led customer experiences.

Fans react to the new voice

Some fans have only just noticed the change. One Reddit user asked: "Is Stephen Graham doing the Maccy D's adverts now?"

Not everyone is happy about it. One person wrote: "Bring back Dexter Fletcher! McDonald's blurb says 'to connect with younger audience' but Graham is only 8 years younger than Fletcher."

Another commented: "Yeah it was a bit weird, he's definitely 'the voice' of Maccys."

A third said: "I have always heard his voice on the UK ads. I've got so used to it, the warm friendly voice. He captures the essence of McDonald's. He's Mr McDonald's! It made me uneasy when it was notably absent."

Fletcher's legacy and Graham's credentials

Fletcher, known for Rocketman, Eddie the Eagle and Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, previously said he enjoyed doing the voiceover work and joked that McDonald's never offered him free food for life. He also described the role as providing a "steady income" that let him take on other projects.

Graham's voice debuted in campaigns for the McCrispy, the Big Arch and "Breakfast Done Properly". The actor, celebrated for This Is England and Netflix's Adolescence, has more than 100 acting credits, including Snatch, Gangs of New York, The Irishman and Pirates of the Caribbean, plus TV roles in Boardwalk Empire, Line of Duty, Peaky Blinders and Boiling Point. He has picked up numerous awards, including major international honours for his performance in Adolescence.

Despite the mixed reaction, many are likely to warm to Graham's presence in the adverts.
