Steph Houghton, the former professional footballer who worked as a pundit for the BBC during the World Cup, is expecting her first baby with her husband, former Bradford City defender Stephen Darby. Darby is living with motor neurone disease (MND). The couple will welcome their new arrival later this year.

The news was shared on BBC Breakfast hours after the couple updated their Instagram followers with a post featuring ultrasound pictures, candles and a heart-shaped cake with the words 'Oh baby' on top in icing. They wrote: "Half of You. Half of Me. Our family will soon be three! Baby Darby 2026."

BBC Breakfast hosts Sally Nugent and Jon Kay delivered the news on their programme. Nugent described the announcement as "fabulous".

Couple's history

Steph Houghton and Stephen Darby married in 2018, the same year Darby retired from football after being diagnosed with MND. The baby news came just over a month after they celebrated their eighth wedding anniversary. Houghton had previously shared a black and white snap from their wedding day on Instagram, writing: "Eight years married to the most amazing Hubby! Happy Wedding Anniversary babe! I love you more than you know! By your side always!"
