Spider-Man: Brand New Day review: Superhero film crafted for 2026
Spider-Man: Brand New Day review: Superhero film for 2026

Five years have passed since the last Spider-Man solo outing, and Spider-Man: Brand New Day arrives after the memory-wiping events of No Way Home. The film proves that a more considered, character-focused approach can meet sky-high expectations, even after the $1.921 billion haul of its predecessor.

Tom Holland remains immensely likeable as Peter Parker, now older and sadder, yet still radiating sincere optimism. His portrayal never feels cloying or false. The story finds Peter in a lonely era, throwing himself into crimefighting while watching his former friends MJ (Zendaya) and Ned (Jacob Batalon) live their lives via Instagram. His only close human contact is police detective Jean DeWolff (Liza Colón-Zayas).

A fresh start with familiar faces

The film reintroduces classic villains such as Scorpion, Tombstone and The Hand in vibrant slow-motion sequences that honor the comics. A mysterious new threat targets the Department of Damage Control, hopping from mind to mind, forcing Spider-Man to ally with its head Bill Metzger (Tramell Tillman). Meanwhile, Peter battles a rise in his arachnid hormone that strips away his humanity and causes gruesome physical symptoms.

Returning screenwriters Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers, along with director Destin Daniel Cretton, find a meaningful way to undo the memory wipe of No Way Home while keeping the story light and heartfelt. Surprises include appearances by Mark Ruffalo’s Hulk and Jon Bernthal’s Punisher, plus the reveal of Sadie Sink’s character.

A model for modern superhero cinema

At 145 minutes, the film may be a bit long, but it balances fan service with accessibility for casual viewers. An end-credits scene offers a tease without giving much away. Spider-Man: Brand New Day is exactly how superhero movies should be made in 2026, blending emotional depth with thrilling action.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day is in UK cinemas from July 29 and in US cinemas from July 31.
