Spencer Matthews Receives Harsh AA Warning About Losing Family
Television personality Spencer Matthews has opened up about a sobering warning he received during his time at Alcoholics Anonymous, where he was told his wife could leave him and take their children if he continued his drinking habits. The 37-year-old Made In Chelsea star, who shares three children with model wife Vogue Williams, 40, revealed the stark reality check during a recent podcast appearance.
Stark Reality Check at Alcoholics Anonymous
During an appearance on Busted frontman Matt Willis's On The Mend podcast, Spencer discussed his former alcohol dependency and attendance at Alcoholics Anonymous meetings. He recounted a particularly eye-opening encounter with a fellow member who delivered a harsh warning about the potential consequences of his behavior.
"When I called him afterwards, he was like 'You see what you saw there could be you and it doesn't matter that you're wealthy and have a fit wife and have lovely kids and your family are well to do," Spencer revealed. "'If you carry on the way you're going all of that can go. Your wife can leave you, she'll take the kids. Your family will disown you...they'll turn their back on you and you will end up just like that.'"
Vogue Williams's Transformative Influence
Spencer acknowledged his wife Vogue Williams's instrumental role in transforming his existence, particularly when she fell pregnant with their firstborn child. The couple shares three youngsters: Theodore, seven, Gigi, five, and Otto, three.
"In the first few years of dating I felt like I was a bit out of my depth," Spencer admitted. "It's nice to feel a sense of equality in a relationship, but I was very aware that if I carried on with my drinking and bad habits that she would get bored and she would leave me."
He continued: "I knew that. She knew that, she never made it a thing, she never sat me down and gave me some sort of ultimatum, but I could feel it, feel that she was a bit disappointed in me. There was one too many times."
The Turning Point: Pregnancy and Realization
Discussing Theodore's impact on his life, Spencer explained how his wife's pregnancy became a pivotal moment. "The light was shined on my boozing when she fell pregnant with our first born Theodore," he said.
"He made a big difference to our relationship, because what felt like joint fun became solo fun quite quickly because she stopped drinking completely obviously," Spencer continued. "And I just didn't I just carried on and it created this divide in the relationship, but also made me realise maybe my drinking habits are not normal."
From Reality Star to Influencer and Athlete
Spencer Matthews, who has carved out a reputation as an influencer and athlete tackling extraordinary physical feats across the globe, participated strongly in AA meetings from the beginning. "I didn't love it. I participated very strongly from the beginning. I thought being there you may as well dive in. My first, I have to say, was an eye opener, this guy was keen for me to see that," he explained about his initial AA experience.
The television personality's candid revelations highlight the serious consequences of alcohol dependency on family relationships, even for those in the public eye with seemingly perfect lives. His story serves as a cautionary tale about how substance abuse can threaten even the most stable-seeming family units.
