Spencer Matthews has spoken candidly about the competitive dynamic he experienced with his wife, Vogue Williams, while they were working together, describing it as 'grating'. The 37-year-old former reality star and the 40-year-old TV presenter, who married in June 2018, previously co-hosted a TV show and a podcast.
Appearing on the On the Mend podcast with Matt Willis, Matthews said: 'Back in those early stages, we had a TV show together... We had a podcast together. So that of course is the sense of competition, like who's funnier? We're constantly competing.' He noted that the competition became particularly pronounced when they were vying for similar job opportunities.
Matthews admitted that he felt a 'kick in the teeth' when his wife secured roles he was interested in. 'When she lands something, I'm really proud of her. Whereas when we were together and doing similar stuff and she would get something that I was potentially interested in... it was a bit like, you're happy for your partner obviously, but it's also a bit of a kick in the teeth,' he explained.
However, the couple now works in different directions, which has alleviated the tension. Matthews, who has pursued performance and sport, while Williams focuses on TV presenting, said: 'Having those differences in what we do has been really helpful.' He added that when she succeeds now, he feels genuine pride.
On the same podcast, Matthews also reflected on his past relationship with alcohol, revealing that Williams would have left him if he had continued his drinking habits. The couple has three children: Theodore, seven, Gigi, five, and Otto, three.
