Spencer Matthews: Competing With Vogue Williams Was 'Grating'

Spencer Matthews has candidly revealed that competing professionally with his wife, Vogue Williams, became "grating" on their relationship. The couple, who married in 2018, previously dispelled rumours of marital trouble in November, but in a new interview, Spencer opened up about the challenges of working together.

The Competitive Dynamic

Speaking on Matt Willis' On the Mend podcast, Spencer, 37, explained how their joint ventures, including a TV show called The Spencer and Vogue Show and a podcast titled Spencer & Vogue, fostered a sense of competition. "She's an incredible woman," he said. "Anyone that's met my wife immediately loves her. She's easily the favourite of the two of us."

He described the constant jostling for attention: "Back in those early stages, we had a TV show together... We had a podcast together. So that of course is the sense of competition, like who's funnier? We're constantly competing. We're having little jabs at each other on camera."

A Shift in Careers

Spencer noted that this dynamic became problematic when they pursued similar opportunities. "When she lands something, I'm really proud of her. Whereas when we were together and doing similar stuff and she would get something that I was potentially interested in, it was a bit like, you're happy for your partner obviously, but it's also a bit of a kick in the teeth. It's like well, why didn't I get it?"

He emphasised that this created a "slight competition" which could be "grating" in a partnership. To address this, Spencer stepped down from their joint podcast earlier this year to focus on his own project, Untapped, which centres on performance and sport, while Vogue pursues TV presenting.

Dispelling Rumours

Vogue, 40, had previously played down claims of difficulties in their relationship after the couple failed to publicly mark their seventh wedding anniversary. In an interview with The Sun, she stated she has reached a point where only "their truth" matters, addressing the speculation head-on.

She told followers on Instagram: "It’s with great sadness that I have to let you know that Spen and I are NOT breaking up! I usually avoid addressing baseless and cruel rumours, but this just keeps coming up."

Family Concerns

Vogue also expressed worry about their children hearing the gossip at school. The couple are parents to son Theodore, seven, daughter Gigi, five, and son Otto, three. "It’s disappointing to see this narrative being pushed almost daily when it’s absolutely not true, and much more importantly, I don’t want my children hearing these lies in the playground," she said.

She concluded by affirming their happiness: "We’re not sure what the angle is or where it’s coming from, but the whole thing feels very strange and mean. We’re very happily married and in love and I hope posting the truth on my own platform might make it stop."

This revelation highlights the complexities of balancing personal and professional lives in the public eye, with Spencer and Vogue now focusing on separate career paths to maintain harmony in their marriage.
