Football transfer expert Fabrizio Romano is embroiled in a social media war with Sky Germany journalist Florian Plettenberg over the Yan Diomande transfer saga.
Romano confirmed on Sunday evening that the Ivorian winger had signed for Real Madrid in a deal worth over €100 million (£85.5 million). Plettenberg responded about an hour later, claiming no full agreement had been reached and that negotiations between RB Leipzig and Madrid would continue.
Plettenberg criticises Romano's approach
Plettenberg said "more things in this business are becoming a bit ridiculous" and explained that if a €100 million bid had been rejected, the final fee would be well over that. He added: "Real Madrid are expected to get the deal over the line tomorrow or, at the latest, during the course of next week."
Romano reacted angrily, threatening to share direct messages between the pair. He wrote: "Maybe I should share messages from few years ago where you asked me 'how can I increase followers' or 'your job is my motivation'…"
Plettenberg and Ornstein respond
Plettenberg called the threat "a sad development" and said Romano "used to be a role model for many. For me too. Unfortunately, for me, not anymore."
The Athletic's David Ornstein later backed Plettenberg, confirming Diomande is "expected" to join Madrid but the deal is not yet finalised. He noted that a second bid of €100m fixed plus €120m package was set to be rejected, but agreement was likely soon.
