Simon Gregson, best known for playing Steve McDonald on Coronation Street, has reportedly been offered a new six-figure contract by ITV bosses, providing a financial lifeline as he faces a £250,000 debt. The 51-year-old actor was previously warned he might have to sell his family home in Wilmslow to repay the loan taken from his production company.
According to reports, the 12-month deal is believed to be worth around £150,000, which is expected to ease the pressure amid his financial struggles. A source told The Sun: 'Simon is delighted to be staying on Corrie and show bosses are equally as happy to keep him on the cobbles.'
Over the weekend, Gregson revealed another costly setback, sharing on Instagram that he had received sky-high insurance quotes for his son's 2010 VW Polo. One quote was £7,000 a year, and another £4,000. He said: 'Even the four grand, it's still miles more than the car is worth. How can the insurance be worth more than the car?'
Earlier this year, it was reported that Gregson had repaid £18,000 over the last 12 months, with liquidators advising that the outstanding balance must be paid from the sale of his property after 36 months. The winding down of his company, Simon Gregson Productions Ltd, cost £51,000 despite a cap of £44,000.
Last year, Gregson refuted claims that he had split from his wife Emma Gleave, blaming a 'court paper error' for referring to her as his 'estranged wife' in financial documents. A source confirmed the couple are still together.
