Thomas Tuchel went from the man who many claimed was the difference maker to one that simply fell into old England habits. The ex-Chelsea and Bayern Munich boss has the best CV of any manager to lead England since Fabio Capello and enjoyed a flawless qualifying campaign. He nailed the changes against Croatia in England's World Cup opener and secured one of the great wins in Mexico only last week.
What went wrong against Argentina?
But against Argentina it all unravelled and much of the blame is being laid firmly at Tuchel's doorstep. His changes, when England took the lead, were largely negative and defensive. England invited the pressure and could not hold on. The loss felt like a sense of deja vu as their defensive tactics saw them come unstuck.
Tuchel's contract and future
Tuchel was handed a contract extension by the FA before even going to a major tournament, which keeps him in the job for the foreseeable future. He himself has claimed the England gig is his dream job. However, England looked like they had not learnt from their 2018 World Cup semi-final despite reaching the latter stages numerous times since.
