Shakira has declared she is swearing off dating for the foreseeable future, describing the breakdown of her 11-year relationship with Gerard Piqué as the 'darkest moment' of her life. The 49-year-old singer opened up in a rare interview with The Times, revealing that the dissolution of her family while her father was seriously ill in hospital left her devastated.
'I was living through the darkest moment – when I saw the dissolution of my family. The family that I had dreamt to keep forever,' she said. Despite the pain, the Colombian superstar believes the experience has made her stronger and wiser. 'I've been through so much pain, but it has made me perhaps in an unforeseen way a wiser person – or stronger, at least,' she added.
However, Shakira made it clear that romance is not on the cards. 'No romance for me for now. There's no space or time in my life for that. My plate is quite full. My kids are my priority. And my career. Strangely enough, I'm in love with my career like I've never been in my life. I'm enjoying my time alone as well,' she told the newspaper.
The couple, who met in 2010 while filming the music video for 'Waka Waka', share two sons, Milan, 13, and Sasha, 11. They announced their separation in June 2022 amid rumours of infidelity, which Piqué has denied. Shakira hinted at betrayal in a previous interview, saying she found out through the press while her father was in intensive care.
Despite the painful split, Shakira expressed gratitude towards Piqué for the family they built together. The former Barcelona footballer has since moved on with 24-year-old Clara Chia Marti.
