Seth Meyers took aim at Donald Trump on Monday night, mocking the president for being booed at the World Cup final, his grudge against Spain, and the ongoing Iran war.
Trump Booed at World Cup Final
On his NBC show, Meyers highlighted the irony of Trump celebrating with the Spanish football team after their World Cup win, given his recent criticism of Spain. “Lately he’s in an especially tense relationship with Spain,” Meyers said. “He’s mad at them because they won’t support his pointless war with Iran.”
Trump had called Spain a “terrible partner in Nato” earlier this month and suggested cutting off trade. Yet at the final, he joined Spain on the podium. “If you’re surprised he’s up there, you forgot the first rule of Trump: everything goes out of the window if gold is around,” Meyers quipped.
Attempts to Remove Trump from Podium
Meyers noted that FIFA president Gianni Infantino tried to guide Trump off the podium. “The head of the most corrupt organization on Earth was, like, ‘This is a bad look,’” Meyers said. “But Trump insisted on standing there, either because he wanted the attention or he forgot where he was because he’s 80 and his brain is smoother than a soccer ball.”
Spain’s captain Rodri also seemed to try to usher Trump offstage. “OK grandpa, time for bed!” Meyers joked. “It’s like being at a house party in high school, getting ready to cheer a buddy on for a keg stand, and then your weirdest neighbor walks into the house.”
Booing and Sports Curse
Trump was booed by the crowd as he stepped onto the field for the trophy presentation. Meyers impersonated an aide: “Mr President, remember that no one’s booing you: that’s just Mitch McConnell saying hello.” He then joked about McConnell’s health: “I’m just kidding, Mitch McConnell is definitely alive. They always make you stay in the hospital an extra week after you put your jeans on.”
Meyers said Trump “put his stink on another event” and that “they’re gonna have to sage MetLife Stadium to get the hex out.” He also referenced Trump’s prediction of an Argentina win: “Trump’s sports curse strikes again. He goes to the NBA finals, the Knicks lose. He intervenes to get a red card overturned, USA loses. He says you can’t bet against Messi, Argentina loses. He owned a USFL team, and the whole fucking league folded. He’s a sports reaper.”
Iran War Claims
Meyers also addressed Trump’s claims that the US has won the war in Iran, despite ongoing conflict. “Obviously, the opposite is happening,” he said. “The Iran war only seems to be spiralling further out of control.” Trump has claimed 38 times the war is over, but also said last week that Iran would be defeated soon. “Which is a weird thing to say about a country you claim has already been defeated,” Meyers concluded.
