Scarlett Johansson turned heads on the red carpet at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) on Monday night as she showcased her rarely seen back tattoo. The 40-year-old actress and director wore a blush-pink Valentino gown with an open back, revealing a detailed vine and rose design, along with a small lamb motif. She completed the look with diamond earrings, silver rings, and a sleek bun, accompanied by her signature smoky eye and pink lip.
Johansson, who first debuted the ink in 2017, was joined by June Squibb, star of her directorial debut Eleanor the Great. The film follows 94-year-old Eleanor Morgenstein, played by Squibb, who moves from Florida to New York City after her best friend’s death and becomes entangled in a web of lies while joining a support group for Holocaust survivors.
Speaking about why she chose the project, Johansson said it resonated with her personal connections: “It had elements in it that were familiar to me, like New York being a character in the film in a way, and the Jewish identity piece, the intergenerational relationships.” She added that she felt confident she could direct the film after reading the script.
Squibb praised Johansson’s directorial skills, telling The Hollywood Reporter: “She’s so down-to-earth. With her knowledge as an actress, she knew immediately what I was doing, where I was going and how I was shifting everything.” Johansson also ensured authenticity by casting real Holocaust survivors for the support group scenes.
Off-screen, Johansson’s husband, Colin Jost, provided support. She confirmed to Entertainment Weekly that the Saturday Night Live star is returning to the show amid cast changes, and expressed interest in guest starring again herself.
