Savannah Guthrie suffered an awkward interview with Serena Williams during Wednesday's episode of the Today show, after pressing the tennis icon on a potential return to the courts.
Guthrie asked Williams about a rumour that she had re-entered the drug testing pool, which some had interpreted as a precursor to a comeback. Williams responded with disbelief, saying: 'I mean, really? Are you asking this on the Today show? Oh my gosh.'
The exchange became increasingly tense as Guthrie repeatedly sought a definitive answer. Williams sidestepped the question, stating she was 'just having fun and enjoying my life right now.' When Guthrie suggested that sounded like a 'maybe', the former world number one quickly shut it down.
Guthrie then referenced Williams's lack of clarification on social media, to which Williams replied she 'couldn't discuss this.' The awkwardness peaked when Guthrie asked if Williams was 'mad at her', to which Williams simply replied 'No' as she walked away.
Williams, who retired in 2022, has previously denied any plans to return. Her career includes 23 Grand Slam titles and four Olympic gold medals.
