Lady Sarra Hoy has moved fans with an emotional Instagram post marking three years since she and her husband, Sir Chris Hoy, received life-changing health news. The update focused on appreciating the present and facing life one step at a time.
In 2023, Sarra was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis (MS), while Chris, a six-time Olympic champion, learned he had prostate cancer. He later revealed the cancer had spread to his bones and was incurable, with doctors telling him his illness was terminal.
Reflecting on the anniversary
In her latest post, Sarra shared 10 images containing messages about putting worries into perspective, finding comfort in everyday moments and focusing on what can be managed in the here and now. She wrote: "Three years since our mutual diagnosis of incurable cancer and multiple sclerosis. Yet here we are. Taking it one step at a time. And doing fine!"
She added: "The future is not ours. It is not yet written. When everything seems too big, make it smaller. What's now? What's next?"
One of the images read: "On the days you feel overwhelmed at the scale of everything," while another said: "Zoom out. Look how small we are. The mountains. The oceans. The stars."
Messages of hope and support
The next image showed their son looking out the window with binoculars, captioned: "Next, zoom in. Make your own world tiny." Another stated: "Feeling small is not the same as being insignificant."
Other slides, including pictures of their two daughters, said: "Tend to the smallest corner of your universe. The ordinary, everyday things are the tiny threads that weave together to make life extraordinary."
The final slides encouraged people to "breathe. Ask yourself 'What's now? What's next?'" and ended with two reminders: "One thread at a time" and "One moment at a time."
Fans and friends respond
Fans and friends filled the comment section with well wishes. One comment read: "This is absolutely beautiful thank you so much for sharing this I've saved it hope you and @chrishoy1 are doing well you are in my thoughts sending love and hugs to you all xxx."
Another fan wrote: "As always, your advice is spot on," while a third said: "It's official. You two are National Treasures." BBC Breakfast presenter Sally Nugent commented: "Beautiful," alongside a heart emoji, and Welsh TV reporter Gabby Logan left two red heart emojis.
Chris continues awareness work
Chris, who hails from Edinburgh, announced in October 2024 during an interview with the Sunday Times that his prostate cancer was terminal. He has since continued to raise awareness, partnering with Marks & Spencer in February 2025 to encourage men to take a 'brief check' for prostate cancer.
He has also called for a more systematic approach to prostate cancer detection, arguing that the government and public health bodies should do more to identify men at risk. In August this year, he told BBC Scotland he was "doing really well" and, like his wife, focusing on the present rather than worrying about the future.
"Right now, life just goes on," he said. "You could spend your time sitting worrying about the future but that doesn't help you in any shape or form."
