Sandra Cuevas, a former mayor of the Mexico City borough of Cuauhtemoc, has issued a statement after her appearance at the 2026 World Cup drew widespread attention on social media. The 40-year-old politician has been spotted cheering for Mexico in the stands, on the streets, and in fan zones, with many fans and online users focusing on her notably large breasts.
Cuevas, who served as mayor with the Party of the Democratic Revolution, has been in high spirits as Mexico secured its place in the knockout stages with victories against South Africa and South Korea. The attention on her chest became so pronounced that she felt compelled to address it publicly.
Embracing the 'Chiquitibum' Comparison
In her statement, Cuevas responded to comparisons with Mar Castro, the model affectionately known as 'Chiquitibum' during the 1986 World Cup in Mexico. She said: 'The Chiquitibum... well, guys, what can I do, I can't just take them off. They had already nicknamed me that in 1986 and it amuses me, I like it.'
She added: 'I don't take it as an attack, there will be those who think that way and take it in a derogatory way, but that's how we Mexicans are.' Cuevas embraced the compliment with humour, noting that she cannot change her physical attributes.
Political Career and Current Role
Beyond her viral moments, Cuevas has an active political career. She currently serves as a Mexico City coordinator for the Mexico Nuevo political movement, which is seeking official recognition as a registered political party. She has also been associated with the National Action Party and the Institutional Revolutionary Party.
Mexico have reached the World Cup quarter-finals only twice in their history, and fans hope Cuevas's presence brings good fortune to El Tri, who are among just three nations to have already secured progression to the knockout stages.
