Sandra Bullock made a rare public appearance on Tuesday, joining her Speed co-star Keanu Reeves and director Jan de Bont for a 30th-anniversary screening of the film at Beyond Fest in Los Angeles. The outing marks Bullock's first major public event since the death of her partner, photographer Bryan Randall, in August 2023.
Bullock, 60, has largely stayed out of the spotlight since Randall's passing, focusing on her two children. Randall, whom Bullock began dating in 2015, died after a private battle with ALS. In a statement at the time, Bullock's sister, Gesine Bullock-Prado, wrote: 'ALS is a cruel disease. But there is some comfort in knowing he had the best of caretakers in my amazing sister.'
During the Q&A session, Bullock reflected on the making of Speed, which was released in 1994 and grossed over $350 million worldwide. 'I was new to the whole game, so I wasn't aware of what was happening or what felt right,' she said. 'I was behind the wheel wanting everyone to be safe. It was special.'
Reeves, 60, added: 'We knew we were doing something wacky.' Director Jan de Bont praised the duo, saying: 'The relationship that those two created together is absolutely amazing. Seeing it back on the screen tonight, it was so real. They were absolutely perfect.'
Bullock had previously told CBS News in 2022 that she was stepping back from acting to be a more present parent. 'Right now, work in front of the camera needs to take a pause,' she said. 'I want to be at home. I just want to be present and responsible for one thing.'
