Sam Smith Confirms Engagement to Christian Cowan

Sam Smith has confirmed their engagement to long-term partner Christian Cowan. The Stay With Me singer, 34, told the New York Times that Cowan is now their fiancé following three years together.

Album Inspired by Romance

The engagement news arrives ahead of Smith's fifth studio album Hazel Eyes, which takes its title from Cowan's eye colour. The album documents the journey of the couple's romance. Smith started writing the opening track, Everlasting Love, prior to their first date and completed it while in the relationship. Cowan, a fashion designer, collaborated with Smith on the wardrobe for the music video for their 2023 track, I'm Not Here To Make Friends.

Public Appearances and Privacy

The pair were spotted hand-in-hand in New York several months afterwards and appeared together on the Met Gala red carpet in May 2024. Cowan counts Jennifer Lopez, Lady Gaga and Heidi Klum among his high-profile clients. Smith had previously stated their intention to keep their love life private. In an interview with GQ in October 2022, they explained: "Over the last few years, as I've become confident in my skin, I've got loads of wonderful romantic attention. It's been incredible. I've decided that I will always keep that private now. I have had relationships where I've shared stuff online and talked about it here and there. And I just don't want to do that. I think being loved by someone is such a gift – for yourself. And I think my job can get in the way of that – the purity of that love – sometimes."
