Sam Neill Dies at 78 After Pneumonia Following Cancer Battle

Hollywood star Sam Neill died after reportedly contracting pneumonia following an intensive cancer battle that left his immune system severely weakened, according to New Zealand reports. The actor, best known for his role in Jurassic Park, passed away on Monday 13 July 2026 at the age of 78, just months after revealing he was cancer-free following treatment for the rare blood cancer angioimmunoblastic T-cell lymphoma. His family described his death as "sudden and unexpected" in a statement shared on his social media accounts.

Circumstances Surrounding His Death

No official cause of death has been confirmed. However, reports from New Zealand claim the beloved actor developed pneumonia after years of gruelling chemotherapy and immunotherapy left him vulnerable to serious infections. According to the New Zealand Herald's Ryan Bridge, Sam's Hunt for the Wilderpeople co-star and close friend Rima Te Wiata said the actor had been struck down by pneumonia. His former partner, Australian journalist Laura Tingle, also told ABC Radio Sydney that the actor's immune system had been badly compromised by his cancer treatment.

Laura Tingle stated: "His poor old body just sort of got a bit exhausted. He's been pretty sick for the last couple of weeks, and everybody who loved him has been willing him on from near and far, but I think it was just a bit too much to recover from one more time. He'd had a lot of chemo and a lot of immunotherapy and, thankfully, it finally cleared him of the blood cancer that he had, but that left him pretty compromised in terms of his immune system."

Family Statement and Cancer Journey

Sam's family announced his death in a statement shared on his social media accounts. It read: "It is with immense sadness that the whānau of Sam Neill share the news of his passing on Monday 13th July, in Sydney, Australia. Sam was surrounded by family and passed with the dignity that has characterised his whole life. The loss was sudden and unexpected but blessed by the fact that Sam remained cancer free."

The actor revealed earlier in 2026 that he had been declared cancer-free, four years after being diagnosed with stage three angioimmunoblastic T-cell lymphoma, a rare form of non-Hodgkin lymphoma. He was diagnosed in 2022 after noticing swollen glands while promoting Jurassic World Dominion. Sam later underwent chemotherapy before receiving immunotherapy treatment, which successfully put the disease into remission.
