Colman Domingo has hit back at homophobic criticism after appearing in drag in Sabrina Carpenter's music video for 'Tears'. The Euphoria star responded to a fan on X who objected to his performance, calling it a character role.
In the Bardia Zeinali-directed video, Carpenter is seen in a forest after a car crash, meeting Domingo in Dr. Frank-N-Furter-esque drag. The visual features a glittery dance break with Domingo and LGBTQ+ performers, inspired by The Rocky Horror Picture Show.
Addressing the backlash, Domingo wrote: "It's a character. Like all the characters I play. Calm down brother. Enjoy the video and the fun that it possesses. Dance it out! It ain't that deep." He also quoted RuPaul, saying: "We are born naked and everything else is drag."
The actor, who has received back-to-back Oscar nominations, previously told NME that he is only the second out gay man to be nominated for playing a gay character, after Ian McKellen. He is set to make his directorial debut with a Kim Novak biopic starring Sydney Sweeney.
