Former Coronation Street star Ryan Thomas has opened up about a terrifying car crash he survived during his time on the soap, describing it as the 'most frightening day of my life'. The 41-year-old actor shared the story on the podcast 'At Home with The Thomas Bro's', which he hosts with his brothers Adam and Scott.
Thomas recalled being 18 years old and staying at a friend's house in Glossop. The next morning, he needed to return to Manchester for work. He fell asleep in the car while a friend was driving along country roads. He woke up to find the car spinning upside down. 'It flipped three times,' he said, 'and landed upside down.'
The car had a roll cage, which Thomas believes saved their lives. 'If it didn't have a roll cage on this car, we would have been crushed,' he explained. After the crash, he and his friend crawled out through a cracked window. The car's engine and wheels gave way shortly after they escaped.
Remarkably, the car landed outside a house, and the couple living there took them in. Thomas described the adrenaline rush of survival, but the full impact hit him the next day. 'The next day, I just burst into tears because your body goes into shutdown,' he said. 'I was in survival mode. Then when it all wore off, I realised I should have been dead.'
Thomas played Jason Grimshaw on Coronation Street from 2000 to 2016. He credited the roll cage for preventing a fatal outcome, stating, 'If that road cage wasn't on, I would have been dead.'
