Russell Brand once made a candid admission about family life with his wife Laura Gallacher, revealing that he found looking after their young children far more exhausting than he had expected. His comments came years before his recent rape and sexual assault convictions, which have put his marriage and family life under renewed public scrutiny.
Laura, who has stood by her husband throughout his trial and even appeared as his only character witness, shares three children with Brand. Their daughter Mabel was born in 2016, followed by Peggy in 2018 and their son Herb in 2023.
Brand's 2019 confession
However, in a 2019 interview with The Sunday Times, Brand admitted he had never spent 24 hours alone looking after his children and confessed that much of the childcare fell to his wife.
"Laura does all of it," he said, before explaining that although he was "dedicated" and "devoted" to his children, he was still surprised by how difficult parenting could be.
He added: "I am still surprised when it's like 'Oh my God, this is really f*****g hard and it's so exhausting."
Criticism and defence
His remarks prompted criticism at the time, with some questioning how much responsibility he took on at home.
Laura's sister, television presenter Kirsty Gallacher, subsequently defended him, dismissing his comments as "flippant" and insisting he was "very hands-on".
Laura herself offered a more affectionate description of their relationship in a 2020 interview with Grazia, while promoting her book The Joy Journal.
"We really do have fun together," she said. "Sometimes it can look like I'm dealing with an adult toddler, but Russell's really into doing the stuff I'm into."
Family background and recent moves
The couple first met when Laura was 19 and Brand was 31, but their early romance did not last. They reconnected in 2015 after Laura had gone through a difficult break-up and eventually married in Oxfordshire.
In 2024, the family relocated to Florida, where they have largely kept their private life away from the British spotlight. That changed during Brand's recent trial, when Laura returned to the UK to support him in court.
