Russell Brand's 13-day whirlwind romance with Geri Halliwell
Russell Brand's 13-day whirlwind romance with Geri Halliwell

Russell Brand, the comedian found guilty of rape on Thursday, once briefly dated Spice Girl Geri Halliwell for just 13 days in 2012. The pair met during preparations for the Olympics Closing Ceremony, following Brand's high-profile divorce from Katy Perry.

A whirlwind romance that fizzled

Halliwell described her fling with the comedian as a "whirlwind" love. Speaking to the Metro several years ago, she said: "Yes. It's been a whirlwind. All I want is to be in a loving relationship. Is he my ideal man? I'm choosy. I want someone who's trustworthy, sweet and kind."

During their brief romance, Halliwell even took Brand house hunting in Devon, which is believed to have been the catalyst for the split. Just three days after viewing countryside properties, the pair agreed to a "cooling down period."

Source details the breakdown

A source told The Mirror at the time: "Geri was smitten but things have petered out a tad. He isn't ready to settle down so soon after coming out of marriage, whereas Geri is probably more ready to have a relationship."

The source added: "She wants a pad and spent Saturday dragging Russell around properties near Devon. It probably seemed a little much. Russell is a huge flirt and Geri won't stand for any nonsense – her friends are telling her not to get serious about him."

While on stage in Weston Super Mare in Somerset in 2012, Brand was heckled by the crowd about his relationship with Halliwell, who is now married to former racing driver Christian Horner.

Guilty verdict and sentencing

Brand is now facing years in prison after being found guilty of raping one of his fans and sexually assaulting three women during his showbiz heyday. On Thursday, jurors unanimously convicted Brand of offences against four women between 2004 and 2009. He was cleared of two further charges of rape and one allegation of attempted indecent assault.

Brand faces the prospect of a lengthy prison term when he is sentenced on Monday next week. In court, he told his wife Laura Gallacher, "Laura, I love you" before the verdict was read, showing no reaction other than closing his eyes. As he was led out of the court, he mouthed "I'm OK" several times to his lawyers.

Detective Superintendent Andy Furphy, who led the Metropolitan Police investigation, paid tribute to the "extraordinary courage, resilience and determination" of the women who spoke out against Brand. He said: "Despite intense media and public scrutiny, they relived deeply personal and traumatic experiences and placed their trust in us. Without their bravery, this outcome would not have been possible."

Furphy added: "Brand used his influence, status and fame to prey on and exploit women. As his profile grew, so too did his sense of entitlement. I hope this conviction sends a clear message that no one is above the law, no matter how famous or powerful they may be."
