Ruby Wax has opened up about her marriage surviving a rogue nanny scandal, as she spoke to Louis Theroux on his BBC Radio 4 podcast 'Grounded'. The comedian and documentary maker, known for her brash interviewing style, revealed that her career decline and jealousy of Theroux's success were difficult to handle.
Wax, who interviewed Donald Trump in the 1990s, described it as her worst interview, saying Trump reminded her of her father and that she asked the stupidest questions. She also recalled interviewing Bill Cosby in 1997, calling him 'frightening' and noting the poison coming from him.
Despite her fame as a celebrity interviewer, Wax said she never really liked it, preferring documentary work. She lamented being typecast as a funny persona, which she felt hindered her serious journalism. Her career downturn in 2003 led to a severe depression, after which she decided to train as a psychotherapist.
Wax's childhood was marked by emotional and physical abuse from her father, and her mother would chase her screaming into the street. She was once left alone in South America at age 11 with only $16. Despite these challenges, she has been open about her mental health struggles and has written books on the subject.
