Cristiano Ronaldo has confirmed that the 2026 World Cup was his last, following Portugal's heartbreaking 1-0 defeat to Spain in the round of 16. The 41-year-old forward, who was seen in tears at the final whistle, emphasized that he values his Euro 2016 triumph as much as a World Cup victory.
Ronaldo's Emotional Farewell
Speaking after the match, Ronaldo said: "It's true, this was my last World Cup. There will be time to think about everything else, to be with my family, and I want to not make decisions when I'm heated. Life goes on." He added: "I have won three titles for Portugal. Before Cristiano, Portugal did not win a single title in history. I won Euro 2016, which for me is like winning a World Cup. I leave with a clear conscience and having given my best for Portugal."
Martinez's Departure and Team Reaction
Portugal's defeat also led to the immediate resignation of manager Roberto Martínez. Ronaldo praised Martínez, stating: "I loved working with Roberto Martínez, a great human being, a great coach. What he did for Portugal was very significant, it is praiseworthy."
Manchester United midfielder Bruno Fernandes also expressed disappointment: "I do not think we were successful. I mean, we should at least have gone a bit further. It's a disappointing moment. We came here with a very clear objective, which was to win the World Cup." He added: "We were good in the first half, but then we dropped back too much and the opposition had far more possession. We lost to one of the title contenders, one of the favourites."
Spain's Quarter-Final Prospects
Spain now advances to the World Cup quarter-finals for the first time since their 2010 triumph. They will face either the USA or Belgium in Los Angeles on Friday evening, aiming for a spot in the semi-finals.
Ronaldo's Club Future
Ronaldo will now focus on his club career with Al-Nassr in Saudi Arabia. The club recently appointed former Tottenham Hotspur and Nottingham Forest manager Ange Postecoglou as head coach for the 2026/27 season.
